By the time you choose to become a merchant you will have to have learned
another profession. Otherwise you will not be granted an admission by the
chamber of commerce. An especially lucrative job is trading products from
your own operations to some far away cities. Of course you can also buy
products from the competition and deliver the stored goods at the right
time to some other town. Huge profits will await you. But caution! Your
local tax office will not settle for foreign currencies. Make sure there
are enough exchange offices with sufficient liquidity in your town!
Master Titles:
1. Rag-and-Bone Man (Storage Shed)
2. Trader (Storage Shed)
3. Merchant (+Storage House)
4. Long Distance Travelling Salesman (+Storage House)
5. Long Distance Salesman (+Storage Hall)
6. Magnate (+Storage Hall), +1AP
(New master titles won´t give you new trading-options, but there are important updates for your barrowsm and the security)
The first level (Storage Shed) simply offers the basic options for long
distance trade. You can view prices und send barrows to neighbouring
towns. Higher levels basically offer more storage room and the
possibility to increase the speed of your barrowsm which really pays off
if you have a lot of them in town.
In some games I experienced a lot of troubles with the little protection
from thieves offered by the Storage Shed. I was forced to upgrade to the in order to stop
goods and money worth around 8.000 to disappear every year. After fully
upgrading security this was past however and I could have saved loads of
money had I chosen to do so before.
If you want to send your own products you can choose to do so straight
from the place of production. This will save you the money for a convoy
from there to your storehouse!
Delivery will take place just as inside town, only the targets will be
icons of the neighbouring towns that will be displayed - once you have
built your storehouse. This might be the reason why many experience
problems finding that feature ;D
Probably the most talked about problem of trading goods between towns is
changing the money into your own home currency. Goods will be paid for in
the respective currencies of the towns they are traded in. Your local tax
office however will ask you for your home currency!
An example: You sell 20 grand swords for 2.500 apiece. Earns you 50.000
minus about 10.000 taxes. If you happen to make this deal after the
exchange office hours you will not be able to pay the taxes and spend
some nice time in the jail - unless you have enough money
left.
Furthermore you cannot rely on exchange offices having a sufficient
amount of money. You might end up in a small office with only 2.000 money
reserves.
So before committing yourself too much to trade between towns you should
check how wealthy the exchange offices are. The first few trades should
not exceed the exchange volume of the banks in order to avoid shortage of
cash. If you want to make a big impact in the trading business you should
consider building a few money exchange offices yourself and then sell
them, since you can't exchange money in your own offices. On the one hand
annoying but on the other hand only logical, because you would only end
up shuffling around your money without changing anything at all.
A newly built money exchange office only has a very limited amount of
money at its disposal. This can be changed by "training" the office. Use
the exchange volume to its full extent every year and it will rise higher
and higher. As a rule of thumb: the bigger the bank, the higher the
exchange volume you may expect.
Hint for purchasing: using the inventory you can buy usable objects from
opponents. When a price is around the norm price (NP) purchase 3 pieces
of the item, out it in your inventory and unpack them again in your
storehouse!
The neighbouring towns will usually not be interested in the same
products. Prices may vary extremely starting from no demand whatsoever
and going to more than 300% of the norm price! Let's face it, this is a
once in a lifetime price, and you can sometimes literally waste a whole
life waiting for this to happen. A good and more realistic price which
will be coming up every 3-5 years is about 200% of the norm price.
So if you do not specialise in only one product, you will be able to provide
regular profit.
Commodities:
Joiner: Cane, Cross of Guard, Gun, Crossbow
Blacksmith: Silver Ring, Silver Chain, Golden Chain, Grand Sword
Perfumer: Dartagnan's Fragrance, Musk Scent, Scent of Saintliness
Alchemist: Stamina Potion, Dr. Faustus
Well, that's it, forget the other commodities as they are not suited for
inter town trade...
(as usual, we don´t have all the correct "ingame-names" for the products, but will modify as soon as we got them)
